Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut-eared Aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis). Both belong to the "Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) group", which also includes Many-banded Aracari (Pteroglossus pluricinctus), Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) and Fiery-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii), all being closely related. Contrary to some views, probably not closely related to Ivory-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus azara). Subspecies atricollis has hybridized with Many-banded Aracari (Pteroglossus pluricinctus) in south-eastern Venezuela (Carapo, R Paragua). Other described forms now considered unacceptable are roraimae (eastern Venezuela and the Guianas), synonymized with atricollis; amazonicus (north-central and east-central Brazil), now lumped into nominate; and wiedii and formosus (southern and eastern Brazil), synonymized with vergens.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • atricollis (Müller, PLS, 1776)   -  Eastern Venezuela and the Guianas, and northern Brazil south to R Amazon (west to R Negro).
  • aracari (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Disjunct populations in north-central, eastern and south-eastern Brazil: south of Amazon, west to R Madeira, east to Maranhío and south to north-eastern Mato Grosso and Goiás; eastern Pernambuco and eastern Alagoas; and also Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
  • vergens Griscom and Greenway, 1937   -  Southern Goiás, southern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo south to eastern Paraná and eastern Santa Catarina.
  • wiedii Sturm, JHCF & Sturm, JW, 1847   -  Eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina).
