Subspecies
Subspecies intergrade extensively, producing many intermediates, and in much of range many individuals impossible to assign to a particular subspecies. Geographical limits given are therefore somewhat arbitrary. Subspecies peruvianus and tectricialis perhaps better merged with nominate. Birds from north-eastern Amazonian Brazil named as subspecies inornatus, but inseparable from nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
flavus (Müller, 1776) - Eastern Colombia, south-western and north-eastern Venezuela and the Guianas south to eastern Ecuador, western Brazil (south to Mato Grosso) and northern Bolivia (Beni).
