Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis), Bannerman's Pipit (Anthus bannermani), Woodland Pipit (Anthus nyassae) and southern populations previously ascribed to Jackson's Pipit (Anthus latistriatus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Anthus similis following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993). The northern populations of Jackson's Pipit (Anthus latistriatus) are lumped with Richard's Pipit (Anthus richardi) also following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Sometimes referred to erroneously as Anthus difficilis. Recently discovered species, separated from Long-billed Pipit (Anthus similis) by DNA evidence. Molecular-genetic analysis suggests closer relationship with Malindi Pipit (Anthus melindae). Possibly also close to Plain-backed Pipit (Anthus leucophrys) or African Pipit (Anthus cinnamomeus).
