No subspecies.
Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer), Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei), Stuhlmann's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris stuhlmanni) and Montane Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris ludovicensis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Nectarinia afra following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993). In Collar and Stuart (1985), Collar and Andrew (1988) and Fishpool and Evans (2001), Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei) was treated as a separate species (confined to the Marungu Mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo, i.e. not the same species limits as recognised by Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993). In Fishpool and Evans (2001) Nectarinia graueri was also treated as a separate species covering the remainder of the range of Prigogine's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris prigoginei) as recognised by Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with Stuhlmann's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris stuhlmanni) and Montane Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris ludovicensis) and sometimes treated as conspecific with one or other of those. Has been considered conspecific also with Greater Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris afer), and is closely related to Golden-winged Sunbird (Drepanorhynchus reichenowi). Considered by some to be possibly of hybrid origin, perhaps Stuhlmann's Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris stuhlmanni) x Eastern Double-collared Sunbird (Cinnyris mediocris).
