Subspecies
Forms a species pair with Shining Flycatcher (Myiagra alecto). Both sometimes placed in a separate genus, Piezorhynchus. Subspecies eichhorni possibly a separate species, females being quite distinctive.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

hebetior (Hartert, 1924) - St Matthias, in Bismarck Archipelago.
eichhorni (Hartert, 1924) - New Hanover, New Ireland and New Britain (Bismarck). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Velvet Flycatcher (Myiagra eichhorni).
cervinicolor (Salomonsen, 1964) - Djaul I, off north-western New Ireland. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Djaul Flycatcher (Myiagra cervinicolor).
