Subspecies
Genus appears not to represent a monophyletic grouping, but traditional arrangement maintained pending further phylogenetic study. May form a superspecies with Sooty Antbird (Hafferia fortis). The two, along with Plumbeous Antbird (Myrmelastes hyperythrus), Goeldi's Antbird (Akletos goeldii) and White-shouldered Antbird (Akletos melanoceps), are often considered to form a species group on basis of large size, but more work needed in order to confirm a close relationship among them. Birds from eastern Panama south to western Ecuador (macrorhyncha) originally described as subspecies berlepschi, but that name rendered invalid when Stub-tailed Antbird (Sipia berlepschi) (previously placed in genus Sipia) was returned to current genus.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
zeledoni Ridgway, 1909 - Extreme southern Nicaragua (San Juan) south to western Panama (Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, Coclé, Veraguas).
macrorhyncha Robbins and Ridgely, 1993 - Eastern Panama (eastern Darién), Pacific slope in Colombia and western Ecuador.
brunnea Phelps, Sr. and Phelps, Jr., 1955 - Extreme north-western Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá).
immaculata (Lafresnaye, 1845) - Locally in central and eastern Andes of Colombia and western Venezuela (Lara, Mérida, Táchira).
concepcion (Donegan, 2012) - Both slopes of the Central Andes of Colombia.
