Subspecies
Genus often merged into Collocalia. In past considered conspecific with Mayr's Swiftlet (Aerodramus orientalis), but apparently not closely related. Formerly linked with Himalayan Swiftlet (Aerodramus brevirostris), but differs in nest type and rump pattern. Has also been considered conspecific with Papuan Swiftlet (Aerodramus papuensis), but does not lack fourth toe. Two forms previously listed as subspecies of present species have now been synonymized with other congeneric taxa: tsubame with subspecies palawanensis of Uniform Swiftlet (Aerodramus vanikorensis) and apoensis with Philippine Swiftlet (Aerodramus mearnsi). Many old records attributed to this species actually refer to subspecies amelis of Uniform Swiftlet (Aerodramus vanikorensis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- whiteheadi (Ogilvie-Grant, 1895) - Mt Data on Luzon (northern Philippines).
- origenis (Oberholser, 1906) - Mt Apo on Mindanao (southern Philippines).
