Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,150 - 1,750 m, occasionally 900 - 2,100 m.

Range (Guide)

Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Southern Colombia (at head of Magdalena Valley in Huila; eastern slope of eastern Andes from Caquet�) southern on eastern slope through Ecuador, eastern Peru and northern Bolivia (south to Yungas of Cochabamba).

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Genetic data indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that includes also Blue-whiskered Tanager (Tangara johannae), Green-and-gold Tanager (Tangara schrankii), Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida), Chestnut-breasted Tanager (Tangara arthus), Silver-throated Tanager (Tangara icterocephala), Saffron-crowned Tanager (Tangara xanthocephala) and Flame-faced Tanager (Tangara parzudakii).
