Nest
A base of twigs and mud, with a soft lining, in the topmost branches of a tree. In colonies.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 6; light blue or green, with speckles and blotches of shades of olive. Incubation: 14 - 22 days; by female only.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 30 - 36 days.

Subspecies
Subspecies frugilegus introduced to eastern North Island and South Island, New Zealand.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • frugilegus Linnaeus, 1758   -  Western Eurasia from the British Isles and Iberian Peninsula, east to central Siberia, north-western Mongolia, Tien Shan and Iran. Winters south to northern Africa, Saudi Arabia and north-western India.
  • pastinator Gould, 1845   -  Central-eastern Asia from central-eastern Siberia and central Mongolia to central China and Korean Peninsula. Winters in Japan, south to south-eastern China.
