Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
occipitalis (Salvin, 1878) - Pacific coast of southern Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala and El Salvador (Volcán de San Salvador). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-crowned Ground-sparrow (Melozone occipitalis).
nigrior Miller, W & Griscom, 1925 - North-central highlands of Nicaragua.
