Subspecies
Genus traditionally subsumed in Garrulax. Population in central highlands of Vietnam (central Annam) and presumably adjacent south-eastern Laos probably represents an undescribed subspecies, or possibly belongs with vitryi.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
sharpei Rippon, 1901 - Northern and eastern Myanmar, north-western Thailand, northern and central Laos, north-western Vietnam, and southern China (western, southern and south-eastern Yunnan, western Guangxi).
sinianum Stresemann, 1930 - South-eastern China (south-eastern Sichuan, northern Guizhou, central and north-eastern Guangxi, southern Hunan, northern Guangdong).
milnei (David, 1874) - North-western Fujian, in south-eastern China.
