Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, grassland and shrubland, subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical and tropical moist shrubland, dry savanna. From 1,200 - 2,300 m.
Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
South-western PRCongo south to western Angola, and southern Uganda, south-western Kenya, eastern and southern DRCongo, Rwanda, Burundi and western Tanzania south to north-eastern Namibia (Caprivi region), northern Botswana (Okavango Basin), central Zimbabwe, west-central Mozambique, northern and eastern South Africa (locally Limpopo south to KwaZulu-Natal) and western Swaziland.

No subspecies.
Formerly thought to form a superspecies with African Golden Weaver (Ploceus subaureus), but the two differ in breeding behaviour and ecology, and ranges overlap.
