Subspecies
Genus probably closely related to Tmetothylacus and Hemimacronyx. May form a superspecies with Fulleborn's Longclaw (Macronyx fuelleborni). Plumage individually variable, and recognition of subspecies often considered unwarranted.
Proposed subspecies hygricus (Upper Guinea) included in nominate. Subspecies vulturnus sometimes misspelt vulturinus.
