Subspecies
Forms a group with Carmelite Sunbird (Chalcomitra fuliginosa) and Amethyst Sunbird (Chalcomitra amethystina) and sometimes thought to form a superspecies with those, despite considerable geographical overlap, but all appear to hybridize occasionally in areas where they meet. Alternatively, may form a superspecies with Buff-throated Sunbird (Chalcomitra adelberti).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
crossensis Serle, 1963 - Extreme south-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon (Mamfe and to west of Bamenda).
stangerii (Jardine, 1842) - Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
rubescens (Vieillot, 1819) - Central and southern Cameroon, south-west, south-eastern and northern Central African Republic and southern borders of Sudan south to northern Angola, north-western Zambia, southern and eastern DRCongo, Uganda, western Kenya and north-western Tanzania.
