Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Bannerman's Sunbird (Cyanomitra bannermani), possibly including also Cameroon Sunbird (Cyanomitra oritis) and Blue-headed Sunbird (Cyanomitra alinae). Nominate subspecies and bohndorffi intergrade in Cameroon.
Proposed subspecies niassae, described from Kondeland (north of L Malawi), in south-western Tanzania, appears indistinguishable from viridisplendens.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
verticalis (Latham, 1790) - Senegal east to western and northern Cameroon.
bohndorffi (Reichenow, 1887) - Central and southern Cameroon and Central African Republic south to inland Gabon, middle DRCongo and northern Angola.
cyanocephala (Bechstein, 1811) - Coasts of mainland Equatorial Guinea and Gabon south to north-western Angola (Cabinda) and extreme western DRCongo (mouth of R Congo).
viridisplendens (Reichenow, 1891) - Southern Sudan and north-eastern and eastern DRCongo east to Uganda, Kenya (east to Mt Kenya) and Tanzania, and north-eastern Zambia and northern Malawi.
