Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Luapula Cisticola (Cisticola luapula), Winding Cisticola (Cisticola marginatus), Ethiopian Cisticola (Cisticola lugubris) and Coastal Cisticola (Cisticola haematocephalus) and all often treated as conspecific, but separated on basis of vocal and plumage differences. Further research, using genetic markers, is required.
The following 12 subspecies are recognised:
isodactylus Peters, W, 1868 - Southern and eastern Malawi, Mozambique and extreme south-eastern Zimbabwe.
galactotes (Temminck, 1821) - Southern Mozambique and eastern coast of South Africa.
amphilectus Reichenow, 1875 - Southern Mauritania and Senegal east to Ghana, southern Nigeria, Cameroon and western Congo Basin (south to Cabinda, in northern Angola). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Winding Cisticola (Cisticola marginatus).
zalingei Lynes, 1930 - Northern Nigeria (possibly also Mali and Niger) east to western Sudan. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Winding Cisticola (Cisticola marginatus).
marginatus (von Heuglin, 1869) - Southern Sudan and northern Uganda. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Winding Cisticola (Cisticola marginatus).
nyansae Neumann, 1905 - Central and eastern DRCongo, Uganda and Kenya. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Winding Cisticola (Cisticola marginatus).
suahelicus Neumann, 1905 - Tanzania, south-eastern DRCongo and extreme north-eastern Zambia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Winding Cisticola (Cisticola marginatus).
schoutedeni White, CMN, 1954 - Western Zambia.
stagnans Clancey, 1969 - Caprivi Strip and adjacent southern Zambia and western Zimbabwe.
luapula Lynes, 1933 - Angola and Namibia to Zambia and Zimbabwe. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Luapula Cisticola (Cisticola luapula).
lugubris (Rüppell, 1840) - Ethiopia, Eritrea. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ethiopian Cisticola (Cisticola lugubris).
haematocephala Cabanis, 1868 - Coastal southern Somalia to Kenya and northern Tanzania.
