Subspecies
Genus often merged into Cercotrichas. Subspecies form two geographically interdigitating groups, north-eastern "white-winged group" and "red-backed group", these possibly differing also in voice and habitat. Geographical variation partly clinal; subspecies ovamboensis, munda and zambesiana perhaps invalid. Described subspecies simulator (from southern Mozambique) synonymized with nominate.

leucoptera (Rüppell, 1845) - South-eastern Sudan, southern Ethiopia, northern Somalia and northern Kenya.
eluta (Bowen, 1934) - Southern Somalia and north-eastern Kenya.
brunneiceps (Reichenow, 1891) - Central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
vulpina (Reichenow, 1891) - Eastern Kenya and eastern Tanzania.
sclateri (Grote, 1930) - Central Tanzania.
zambesiana (Sharpe, 1882) - Southern Sudan, northern and eastern DRCongo, Uganda and western Kenya south to eastern and southern Zambia, eastern Zimbabwe and northern Mozambique.
munda (Cabanis, 1880) - Southern Gabon east to western DRCongo and south to central Angola.
ovamboensis (Neumann, 1920) - Southern Angola and northern Namibia east to south-western Zambia and western Zimbabwe.
leucophrys (Vieillot, 1817) - Southern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique south to northern and eastern South Africa.
