Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Moluccan Woodcock (Scolopax rochussenii), with which sometimes considered conspecific. Subspecies heinrichi proposed for northern Sulawesi, based on somewhat smaller bill of only three specimens. Form recently discovered breeding on Mindanao (south-eastern Philippines) might be attributable to this species, but probably constitutes new, as yet undescribed, species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- heinrichi Stresemann, 1932 - North-eastern Sulawesi.
- celebensis Riley, 1921 - Montane forests of Sulawesi.
