Nest
A round, loosely constructed platform of reeds and grasses on the ground, placed in short grass marsh in several centimetres of water, or occasionally on dry land.
Subspecies
Formerly considered as conspecific with Grey Crowned-crane (Balearica regulorum).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pavonina (Linnaeus, 1758) - Scattered populations in sub-Saharan western Africa from Senegambia to L Chad.
ceciliae Mitchell, 1904 - Sub-Saharan Africa from Chad to Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya, especially in basin of upper R Nile.
