Subspecies
Closely related to African Pygmy-Kingfisher (Ispidina picta). Ugandan birds described as subspecies ugandae, but inseparable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ruficeps (Hartlaub, 1857) - Liberia east to Ghana.
lecontei Cassin, 1856 - South-western Nigeria through Cameroon to western Gabon, and from Congo Basin to western Rift Valley and south-western Uganda; isolated records from R Congo mouth, northern Angola and south-western Sudan.
