Subspecies
Often placed in monotypic genus Trachylaemus, but morphology, plumage, behaviour and some vocalizations similar to those of Crested Barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii), which thus connects present species to Red-and-yellow Barbet (Trachyphonus erythrocephalus) and others.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
goffinii (Goffin, 1863) - Sierra Leone east to Ghana-Togo border.
togoensis (Reichenow, 1891) - Extreme eastern Ghana to south-western Nigeria.
purpuratus Verreaux & Verreaux, 1851 - South-eastern Nigeria east to southern Central African Republic, south to northern Angola and central Zaire.
elgonensis Sharpe, 1891 - Southern Sudan and eastern Zaire east to western Kenya.
