Habitat
Primary and mature, selectively logged, montane and lowland Atlantic forest, relatively small and degraded forest patches and gallery forest, although generally in the proximity of large forest tracts. From sea-level - 800 m.
Eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and south-eastern Brazil (Sío Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina; probably extinct in Rio Grande do Sul).
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction, degradation and frgamentation through logging, dam construction, are the main threats.

Voice
A series of 3-12 strident 'keer' notes. Soft, even drumming, lasting 1.5 seconds.

Similar Species
Lineated Woodpecker (Hylatomus lineatus) which has a black throat, breast and rump. Robust Woodpecker (Campephilus robustus) which is larger with all-red head, and has buff extending up the back.
