Pet trade, loss of pinewood habitat due to logging, fires and human disturbance are the main threats.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
teydea Webb, Berthelot & Moquin-Tandon, 1841 - Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain.
polatzeki E. J. O. Hartert, 1905 - Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Gran Canaria Blue Chaffinch (Fringilla polatzeki).
Similar Species
Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) which is less robust and has a shorter tail.
