Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Long-crested Pygmy-tyrant (Lophotriccus eulophotes), and sometimes treated as conspecific. Subspecies congener thought by some to be possibly a separate species.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
guianensis Zimmer, JT, 1940 - The Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (north of Amazon in northern Pará and Amapá).
affinis Zimmer, JT, 1940 - South-eastern Colombia (from Meta south to Putumayo, Vaupés and Amazonas), north-western Brazil (upper R Negro), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of Amazon).
vitiosus (Bangs & Penard, 1921) - Eastern Peru from eastern San Martín and southern Loreto south to Huánuco.
congener Todd, 1925 - Western Brazil (south-western Amazonas) and eastern Peru (east of R Ucayali).
