Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From 250 - 1,250 m, occasionally to 1,800 m.
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.
Eastern base of Andes from southern Colombia (southern from western Meta) south to western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Possibly most closely related to Yellow-bellied Elaenia (Elaenia flavogaster ) on basis of voice, behaviour and large crest.
