Subspecies
Plumage similarities suggest that it is most closely related to Surf Cinclodes (Cinclodes taczanowskii), Seaside Cinclodes (Cinclodes nigrofumosus) and Blackish Cinclodes (Cinclodes antarcticus). Subspecies chilensis poorly differentiated, possibly not diagnosable.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chilensis (Lesson, R, 1828) - South-central Chile (Aconcagua south to northern Aisén) and western Argentina (Mendoza south to northern Santa Cruz).
patagonicus (Gmelin, 1789) - Southern Chile (from north-central Aisén) and southern Argentina (from southern Santa Cruz) south to Tierra del Fuego.
