Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Bougainville Fantail (Rhipidura drownei), Dusky Fantail (Rhipidura tenebrosa), Rennell Fantail (Rhipidura rennelliana), Kandavu Fantail (Rhipidura personata) and Samoan Fantail (Rhipidura nebulosa).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

verreauxi Marie, 1870 - New Caledonia and Loyalty Is (Lifou, Mar�).
spilodera Gray, GR, 1870 - Banks Is and northern and central Vanuatu (south to �fat�). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Vanuatu Streaked Fantail (Rhipidura spilodera).
layardi Salvadori, 1877 - Western Fiji Is (Viti Levu, Ovalau). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Fiji Streaked Fantail (Rhipidura layardi).
erythronota Sharpe, 1879 - Northern Fiji (Vanua Levu and neighbouring islands).
rufilateralis Sharpe, 1879 - Taveuni, in northen Fiji Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Taveuni Streaked Fantail (Rhipidura rufilateralis).
