Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest and shrubland, heavily degraded former forest, rural gardens.

Range (Guide)
Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Bougainville Fantail (Rhipidura drownei), Dusky Fantail (Rhipidura tenebrosa), Rennell Fantail (Rhipidura rennelliana), Kandavu Fantail (Rhipidura personata) and Samoan Fantail (Rhipidura nebulosa).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • verreauxi Marie, 1870   -  New Caledonia and Loyalty Is (Lifou, Maré).
  • spilodera Gray, GR, 1870   -  Banks Is and northern and central Vanuatu (south to Éfaté). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Vanuatu Streaked Fantail (Rhipidura spilodera).
  • layardi Salvadori, 1877   -  Western Fiji Is (Viti Levu, Ovalau). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Fiji Streaked Fantail (Rhipidura layardi).
  • erythronota Sharpe, 1879   -  Northern Fiji (Vanua Levu and neighbouring islands).
  • rufilateralis Sharpe, 1879   -  Taveuni, in northen Fiji Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Taveuni Streaked Fantail (Rhipidura rufilateralis).
