Geographical variation partly clinal. Proposed subspecies connectens, from north-central Sulawesi, and improbatum (of which sordidum is a synonym), from south-east, considered to represent part of this cline, and therefore merged with rufofuscum.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
celebense Strickland, 1849 - Northern Sulawesi (incliding islands of Manterawu, Bangka and Lembeh).
togianense (Voous, 1952) - Togian Is (northern Sulawesi).
rufofuscum (Stresemann, 1931) - Central and south-eastern Sulawesi, including Butung I.
