Subspecies
No subspecies.
Closely related to Papyrus Gonolek (Laniarius mufumbiri), but the two are better treated as independent species, rather than as a superspecies. Their closest allies are Yellow-crowned Gonolek (Laniarius barbarus) and Black-headed Gonolek (Laniarius erythrogaster), the four constituting a lineage that is sister to the cluster comprising Ethiopian Boubou (Laniarius aethiopicus), Turati's Boubou (Laniarius turatii), Southern Boubou (Laniarius ferrugineus), Swamp Boubou (Laniarius bicolor) and Luhder's Bush-Shrike (Laniarius luehderi). Birds from Mt Oku (Cameroon) described as a geographical subspecies, craterum, on account of slightly greater size, but size variation of species is clinal.
