Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through clearance for agriculture and urbanization is the main threat.

Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Possibly closest to Thamnomanes or Megastictus species on basis of similarities of posture, tail movements, foraging behaviour within mixed-species flocks, and some vocalizations.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Female Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) is less streaky and more well-marked on wings.
