Subspecies
Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Specimens from Honduras not racially identifiable; tentatively included in australis, but could belong with itzensis.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
uropygialis Nelson, 1899 - Western Mexico (southern Sonora south to Guerrero). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Grey-collared Becard (Pachyramphus uropygialis).
major (Cabanis, 1847) - Eastern Mexico (southern Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí south to Oaxaca and western Chiapas).
