Large. Medium, straight bill. Sexes alike.
Adults : Upperparts and underparts entirely black. Eyering, bright red. Eye, yellow. Bill, bright red. Legs, pale yellow.
Immatures : Light adult but mantle, scapulars, wing-coverts, have brown fringes. In flight, underwing is paler. Eyering, orange-brown. Bill, dull red with blackish tip. Legs, dull pink.
