Montane gallery forest with slopes covered in grasses and bushes. From 1,800 - 2,400 m.

Unknown to Burundi, Rwanda.

Itombwe (Mitumba) Massif, extreme eastern Zaire; also probably adjacent south-western Rwanda (Nyungwe forest) and north-western Burundi (near Teza).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through clearance for agriculture is the main threat.

Voice
Possibly long, mournful whistles.
Subspecies
Occasionally treated as a subspecies of Oriental Bay-owl (Phodilus badius), but probably in error.
