Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Australian Masked-Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae), Golden Masked-Owl (Tyto aurantia), Lechuza de las Tanimbar (Tyto sororcula), Taliabu Masked-Owl (Tyto nigrobrunnea) and Minahasa Masked-Owl (Tyto inexspectata). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Australian Masked-Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae). Evidence of extinct populations from Mussau and New Ireland may refer to undescribed subspecies of present or closely related species, perhaps also isolated on single islands, and suggests that masked-owls may once have occurred more widely in Bismarck Archipelago.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Australian Masked-Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae).
