Habitat
Forest, woodland, savanna-like habitats, rural gardens, parks, plantations. From sea-level - 1,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
A mid to high-pitched, nasal 'tjiw', in a slow or hurried series, uttered in flight.

Nest
Cup-shaped covered in lichen and moss, bound together with spiders web, lined with soft plant fibers, placed on a horizontal twig of a small tree usually below 3 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2; white. Incubation: 15 - 16 days; by female only. Often two broods in a season.

Young
Fledge in 22 - 24 days.

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • macroura (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Guianas; Amapá, northern and southern Pará, Mato Grosso, south-western Goiás and Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Paraná states in Brazil; Paraguay.
  • hirundo Gould, 1875   -  Eastern Peru.
  • simoni Hellmayr, 1929   -  North-eastern Brazil from southern Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Pernambuco and Bahia to central Goiás and Minas Gerais.
  • boliviana (Zimmer, 1950)   -  Savanna of north-western Bolivia (Beni).
  • cyanoviridis Grantsau, 1988   -  Serra do Mar in southern São Paulo state.


Similar Species
Male Violet-capped Woodnymph (Thalurania glaucopis).
