Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Miombo Tit (Melaniparus griseiventris), Ashy Tit (Melaniparus cinerascens) and Grey Tit (Melaniparus afer). Has been considered conspecific with either one or both of last two, but differs morphologically, and is separated geographically from both by Miombo Tit (Melaniparus griseiventris).
Nominate subspecies intergrades with barakae in northern Kenya.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
thruppi (Shelley, 1885) - Southern and eastern Ethiopia, Somalia (except south-west) and northern Kenya.
barakae (Jackson, 1899) - Extreme eastern Uganda, Kenya, south-western Somalia (Gedo) and north-eastern Tanzania.
