Subspecies
Closely related to and perhaps forming a superspecies with Western Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus brachyrynchus). The two belong to the "African black-headed group", which also includes Green-headed Oriole (Oriolus chlorocephalus), Sao Tome Oriole (Oriolus crassirostris), Mountain Oriole (Oriolus percivali), African Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus larvatus) and Black-winged Oriole (Oriolus nigripennis). The name permistus is considered to be a younger synonym of meneliki. Subspecies intergrade in central Ethiopia.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • monacha (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Eritrea and northern Ethiopia.
  • meneliki Blundell & Lovat, 1899   -  Southern Ethiopia.
