Has been treated as a subspecies of Common Stonechat (Saxicola torquatus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• dacotiae (Meade-Waldo, 1889)   -  Canary Islands.
• murielae ! Bannerman, 1913   -  Formerly Canary Is. (Montaņa Clara and Allegranza). Extinct.
