Canary Is, occurring on La Palma, Gomera, Tenerife and El Hierro; formerly also on Gran Canaria, where now extinct.
 
Population
Estimated population is 5,000 - 20,000 (2010) and stable.
Status LC
Intensive exploitation of laurel forests, resulting in habitat loss and fragmentation, illegal hunting at drinking sites, predation by introduced mammals including rats, grazing pressure from sheep, and recreational activities during the breeding season are the main threats.

Habits
In large numbers at fruiting trees.
Food
Mainly fruit but also grain and occasionally buds, leaves and shoots.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Madeira Laurel-pigeon (Columba trocaz), with which it is sometimes considered conspecific. Also related to Common Wood-Pigeon (Columba palumbus), Afep Pigeon (Columba unicincta) and probably Laurel Pigeon (Columba junoniae).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Only likely to be confused with Laurel Pigeon (Columba junoniae) or dark Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) (Feral Pigeon).
