Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Spot-crowned Barbet (Capito maculicoronatus) and shares some plumage patterns, but probably not very closely related, and is separated geographically from it by divergent Five-colored Barbet (Capito quinticolor). Possibly distantly related to White-mantled Barbet (Capito hypoleucus).
