Afghanistan (B) (NB), Bahrain (B) (NB), Bangladesh, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran [Islamic Republic of], Iraq (B) (NB), Israel, Jordan (B) (NB), Kuwait (B), Lebanon, Nepal, Oman (B), Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey (B) (NB), United Arab Emirates, Yemen.
Vagrant to Cyprus, Qatar.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Racial variation largely clinal, and often obscured by effects of plumage wear.
The following 12 subspecies are recognised:
- akyildizi Watson, 1961 - Southern Turkey, possibly into north-western Syria.
- palaestinae Zedlitz, 1911 - Lebanon, southern Syria, eastern Israel, Jordan and north-western Saudi Arabia.
- deltae Reichenow, 1904 - Western Israel south to northern Egypt (R Nile delta).
- natronensis Nicoll, 1917 - Wadi el Natron, in northern Egypt.
- gracilis (Lichtenstein, 1823) - R Nile from northern Egypt (Cairo) south to central Sudan.
- carlo Zedlitz, 1911 - Red Sea coast of from north-eastern Sudan south to Somalia.
- yemenensis Hartert, 1909 - Western coast of Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
- hufufae Ticehurst & Cheesman, 1924 - North-eastern Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
- carpenteri Meyer de Schauensee & Ripley, 1953 - Coastal Oman.
- irakensis Meinertzhagen, R, 1923 - Iraq and south-western Iran, possibly into north-eastern Syria.
- lepida Blyth, 1844 - South-eastern Iran, southern Afganistan, Pakistan and northern India.
- stevensi Hartert, 1923 - South-eastern Nepal, north-eastern India and Bangladesh.
