Subspecies
Often treated in genus Myrmecocichla. On basis of female plumage, nominate subspecies and pachyrhyncha form one group, and the three other subspecies another.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
frontalis (Swainson, 1837) - Senegal and Gambia east to northern Cameroon.
limbata (Reichenow, 1921) - Eastern Cameroon east to Central African Republic.
clericalis (Cabanis, 1882) - Southern Sudan, northern DRCongo and Uganda.
albifrons (Rüppell, 1837) - Eritrea and northern Ethiopia.
