Subspecies
Although genus traditionally placed after Myrmoborus, it appears closely related to Drymophila. Regarded as sister-species of Guianan Antwarbler (Hypocnemis cantator). However, recent genetic study indicates considerable genetic distance between the two, suggesting that speciation may have occurred several million years ago.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
hypoxantha Sclater, 1869 - Southern Colombia (Putumayo east to Vaupés, south to Amazonas), eastern Ecuador, north-eastern and east-central Peru (north of R Marañón and, east of R Ucayali, south to Ucayali) and western Amazonian Brazil (north of R Amazon east to western bank of R Negro, and south of R Amazon in R Javari and upper R Juruá drainages).
ochraceiventris Chapman, 1921 - South-eastern Amazonian Brazil between R Tapajós/R Teles Pires and R Xingu.
