Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Vagrant to Morocco.
Mauritania east to Ethiopia and south to Namibia and South Africa, except areas of uninterrupted forest or desert.
 
Population
Estimated population is 197,000 (2011) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Two subspecies sometimes recognized, with nominate subspecies in western Africa, and rest of range covered by subspecies pileatus . However, variation is only in size, and clinal from small in west to large in south.
