Subspecies
Related to Spot-winged Pigeon (Patagioenas maculosa), with which it shares scaly pattern on plumage; possibly also related to Bare-eyed Pigeon (Patagioenas corensis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
marginalis (Naumburg, 1932) - North-eastern Brazil (Piauí and Bahia, possibly Goiás).
picazuro Temminck, 1813 - Eastern and southern Brazil (from Piauí and Pernambuco west to Mato Grosso and south to Rio Grande do Sul) west to north, eastern and south-eastern Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz, Tarija), and south to south-central Argentina (La Pampa and rarely Río Negro).
