Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 450 - 2,500 m, occasionally to 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)

Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia.

Extreme eastern Uganda (Mt Elgon) and central Kenya, southern in highlands to Malawi mountains west of Rift Valley.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Eastern Green Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus simplex) and Western Green Tinkerbird (Pogoniulus coryphaea), all having in past been placed in separate genus Viridibucco. Populations of present species show slight clinal increase in size towards south, but no constant geographical colour differences to warrant subspecific differentiation. Birds from Chyulu Hills (Kenya) formerly separated as subspecies chyulu.
