Habitat
Freshwater lakes, swamps and large water impoundments, in flocks.

Afghanistan (P), Australia (B), Bangladesh, Cambodia, China (mainland), Hong Kong (China), India, Indonesia, Iraq (NB), Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (NB), Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea (B), Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam.

Vagrant to Bahrain, Iran [Islamic Republic of], Jordan, Maldives, United Arab Emirates.

Population
Estimated population is 130,000 - 1,100,000 (2010).

Voice
A shrill 'pee-whit' uttered in flight. Also a descending 'pee-yew', a high-pitched 'whit' and a high-pitched musical trill.

Nest
In a hollow of a tree, sometimes lined with down and some feathers.

Eggs (Guide)
6 - 9; pearly white; oval; about 48 x 35 mm. Incubation: by female.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • coromandelianus (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Tropical south-east Asia from Pakistan, China and India, through Malaysia, Philippines to northern New Guinea.
  • albipennis Gould, 1842   -  Eastern coast of Queensland, Australia.
