Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, dry savanna. From 600 - 1,500 m.
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, Uganda.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies saturatior, butleri, brehmi, emini and florentiae included within nominate petrosus.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- petrosus (Gmelin, 1789) - Senegal east to Kenya.
- major Neumann, 1908 - North-western Ethiopia.
- brehmi Neumann, 1908 - Southern Chad to central Sudan.
- florentiae Ogilvie-Grant, 1900 - Southern Sudan and southern Ethiopia to north-eastern DR Congo, northern Uganda and central Kenya.
