Habitat
Paper-barks forests, mangroves, scrublands, grassy woodlands, river red gum thickets, gardens all in the vicinty of water.

Range (Guide)
Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Singly, in pairs or small groups, often associated with other honeyeaters in feeding flocks.

Food
Insects and nectar.

Voice
A repeated, rising 'zzheep', like ayoung cuckoo. A brisk, silvery 'sweeta-swee, sweeta-swee', in group display.

Nest
Small, cup-shaped, composed of fine strips of bark, matted with webbing and lined with fine grass, suspended from the end of a thin branch, often overhanging water.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 3, rarely 4; white, spotted and freckled with fine red-brown, occasionally purple-brown, particularly at the larger end; tapered-oval; about 18 x 13 mm. Incubation: about 12 days; by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 10 - 11 days.

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Rufous-throated Honeyeater (Conopophila rufogularis). Populations of New Guinea and Torres Strait proposed as subspecies mimikae (described from Mimika R, in south-western New Guinea), but appear not to differ in plumage or size from Australian populations.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • mimikae Mathews, 1924   -  Northern and southern New Guinea and Aru Islands.
  • albogularis (Gould, 1843)   -  New Guinea, northern Australia.


Similar Species
Rufous-throated Honeyeater (Conopophila rufogularis) which has a distinctive rufous throat.
