Subspecies
Often placed in monotypic genus Heterospizias, mainly due to longer legs and wings. Population of Paraguay, south-eastern Brazil and Argentina has been awarded separate subspecies, rufulus, but differs only in size, and not generally considered valid. Birds of Argentina have alternatively been in equally dubious subspecies australis.
